Course Objectives: The purpose of this module is to provide nurses with information about caring for people with total hip and total knee joint replacement surgeries, including patient teaching aimed at preventing complications and improving outcomes. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify five nursing diagnoses and examples of interventions relevant to the care of a person with a joint replacement.
  • Describe two strategies to help patients and families cope with self-care deficits and the transition from hospital to home after a total joint replacement.
  • Discuss the impact of managed care on preventing complications and managing care for people who have had joint replacement surgery.
